In its most common form, these carcinomas may seem initially a small wart or bump on the skin that grows, or a small sore or wound that just will not heal and is becoming larger.
Basal cell carcinoma may appear as a bump, usually bright, light or dark, or capillaries and veins inside. Other times it may appear as a sore or wound that does not heal and goes bigger, or a flake scar or grow very slowly.
Squamous cell carcinoma appears as a bump, but is growing rapidly, and is usually covered with a scab. Often, blood and easily sore or ulcer.
Squamous cell carcinoma can develop from a pre-cancerous lesion of the skin known as actinic keratosis. It is red or brown spots, scaly or gritty, appearing after 50 years in areas of sun-exposed skin: the scalp (especially the bald), temples, nose, ears, chest and back of hands. They are much more common in people of skin and eyes. Should be addressed by the possibility of transformation into a squamous cell carcinoma.
